The official GED test is a four subject high school equivalency test that measures skills required by high schools and requested by colleges and employers. After a student passes the GED test, his/her diploma or credentials will be issued by the student's state. The student will receive a GED transcript to apply to college or state training, or use to obtain a better job. All examinations are available in English or Spanish. The GED exam will test in the four subject areas:


Reasoning Through Language Arts
150 minutes (includes a 10 minute break)

Mathematical Reasoning 
115 minutes

Science
90 minutes

Social Studies 
70 minutes



What is the computer based GED exam?

Computer-based testing will allow students to take the GED test at our GED Testing Center using a computer rather than paper and pencil. The benefits include:

1. Test-takers can access an easy-to-use online registration andscheduling system.
2. Program will eliminate the need for securing testing booklets.
3. Streamline services from GED Testing Services and its partner, Pearson Vue, will centralize registration, scheduling, testing, and scoring.


How do I register for the GED exam?


If you are ready to take the Official GED exam, simply:

1. Call 1-877-EXAM-GED (1-877-392-6433) or
2. Visit www.ged.com to complete the registration or
3. Come by the Southwest ISD Office of Community Education and we will walk you through the process. 



What is the testing schedule?

Mondays/Tuesdays: 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. or
Saturdays: 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.



What do I need to bring on test day?

All students registered to test must bring one valid form of identification. The ID must be government issued and must be current. ID must also include the test taker's name, address, date of birth, signature, and photograph. The Chief Examiner will accept the following forms of identification:

*Valid Passport
*Valid Driver's License
*Learner's Permit
*National/State/Country Identification Card
*Any other form of government-issued ID (foreign or national)

Tester MUST be a Texas resident. If ID is issued from another state, tester will need to show proof of residency such as a utility or phone bill. Nothing else is required. All materials needed for the test will be provided to the testers at the testing center.


What does it cost to register for the official GED exam?


The four content areas cost $36.25 each for a total of $145. If an exam is failed, the tester can retake the failed exam two times for $16.25 each within twelve months of the original failed attempt. After the first three attempts, the tester will have to wait an additional 60 days to retake the failed exam at the full price of $36.25.


Do I have to take all four exams in one sitting?


No. All testers can register and pay for one exam at a time.



What does it mean to "pass" the GED exam?


The official GED exam will have a passing score of 145 on each test part. Therefore, testers will need to reach a score of at least 145 on each portion of the test and a total score of 580 across the four-part battery in order to receive the GED test credential. Testers may also BE ELIGIBLE TO EARN 10 COLLEGE CREDIT HOURS if they receive a score of 175+ on a test part.

When do I get my GED score report?


Scores are available the same day students test on your MyGED online portal under the My Score section. Log in at www.ged.com to see your scores. A full report will be available within three hours of testing on all content areas through the enhanced score report.
