Jeanette Ball Named Assistant Superintendent of Administration & Human Resources |
Congratulations to Mrs. Jeanette Ball who was named at the Tuesday, May 18th board meeting, the new Assistant Superintendent. Mrs. Ball was the Executive Director of Employee and Student Services for the last 5 years and will now be taking over the position left vacant by our current Superintendent Dr. Verstuyft. |
Southwest ISD wins 8th place Nationally in the 2010 SCHOOLe Awards |
Southwest ISD & Webmaster Roger Campos was chosen as a top 15 finalist out of 30 semi-finalists throughout the nation. After the final round of voting, Southwest ISD came out in 8th place! The Schoole Awards were designed to recognize the best district Web sites. The best Web sites follow good design practices, have clear, concise, and complete content, and serve a purpose: to fulfill its audience's needs.

Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft, Ed.D started his position as Superintendent of Southwest ISD on Monday, May 3, 2010 . Dr. Verstuyft has served as the Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources for Southwest since 2005 and has also held the positions of Executive Director of Administration and Pupil Services, Principal of Southwest High School, Principal of McAuliffe Junior High in the Southwest District, Assistant Principal at McAuliffe, and began his career in the Southwest ISD as a teacher and coach at McNair Junior High in 1989. |

Congratulations to Big Country Special Ed Teaching Assistants Lauri Massey and Crickett Grossenbacher! Lauri Massey is a champion for children’s rights. She builds self-esteem through praise for the student and plans thoughtful lessons tailored to their needs. Lauri takes time each day to recognize the students for their good work. In return, the students respond and adore her. Crickett Grossenbacher provides excellent care for all the Special Needs students and brings sunshine and laughter to everyone's lives. Her teacher, Joanna Garza, considers her - her right hand! Even former students come back to visit her. |

Dragon Tennis is Regional Tournament Bound! |
The boys and girls tennis teams competed in Laredo this past weekend at the 29-5A District tournament and did very well. The Girls Tennis Team placed 2nd, Sam Ramires and Lessli Ruiz are District Champions in Girls Doubles, Kahli Caldaron and Christian Castro placed 2nd in Mixed Doubles, Andre Martinez and Ruben Serna placed 3rd in Boys Doubles They compete this weekend at the Regional Tournament at McFarlin Tennis Center. Times are TBA. |

Dragon Swim Team Wraps Up Record Season |
The Dragons competed at the Regional Championship Swim Meet Friday, Feb. 12th and Sat, Feb. 13th going further than before. 19 athletes qualified to compete at regionals and after the preliminaries the Dragons qualified for the FINALS in 4 Relays and 4 Individual events. Improving times and establishing Personal Bests in many events, our Dragons have taken it further than ever before making a name for themselves at the regional level. The Girls 200-yrd Medley Relay Team (Freshman-Kelly Verstufyt- Backstroke, Senior-Melanie Gomez-Breaststroke, Junior-Cassandra Bernal-Butterfly, and Freshman- Josalynn Smith- Freestyle) swam their fastest time establishing a school record placing 6th place over all. Individually, Sophomore- Pedro Diaz finished 7th place over all in the 100-yrd Backstroke. He
also qualified for finals in the 200-yrd IM. Senior- Melanie Gomez qualified for finals and reached a "PR" (personal record) in her signature event the 100-yrd Breaststroke. Moving up and also establishing PR's in the 50-yrd Freestyle were Freshman- Kelly Verstuyft and Junior- Cassandra Bernal. Congratulations on a very progressive swim season. Coach Jerry Hernandez said,"I am very proud to be a part of this wonderful and progressive program. Thank you Dragon Family for all your support this season and we look forward to next season. Come on out and support your hard-working record- making Dragon Swim Team."

English Class Recieves a Letter from President Obama |
Ms. Barbra King and her 9th grade English class have been writing several letters to different people when she suggested writing to President Obama. The class wrote rough drafts, edited them, and then rewrote. The letters were then sent as a group to President Obama on December 15, 2009. In February of 2010, they received a reply. The class received a very nice letter, a picture of President Obama, and a picture of Bo, their dog. The students were very excited and impressed that the President took time out of his busy schedule to write to them! |

Two Teachers Receive SAMSEC Award! |
The San Antonio Math & Science Education Coalition has presented two teachers from the Southwest District with the San Antonio Mayoral & County Judge Outstanding Mathematics & Science Award. This year's winners are Robert Boucher from McAuliffe Middle School and to Veronica Reyna from the Southwest High School - 9th Grade Annex. Each winner was presented a check for $1,000 in front of their classes and were invited to attend an award ceremony in the future. Congratulations to these teachers and their students!

Senior, Tre'vion Johnson to Receive Full Scholarship! |
Congratulations to Southwest Senior, Tre'vion Johnson, who has been offered a full athletic scholarship to Texas A&M Kingsville, for football. He signed his letter of intent on Monday, February 8, 2010 in the High School Foyer. |
Dragon Swim Team Success! |
The Dragon Swim Team won 2nd place overall in both divisions, and earned the 2010 Boys and Girls District 29-5A Champion Runner Up. This is the first time the Dragons bring home a District Plaque in Swimming. Way to go!
