Frequently Asked Questions

CAST STEM Frequently Asked Questions

Will transportation be provided for students?

SWISD students who are zoned to attend Legacy High School will ride their assigned bus.  We are working on transportation options for SWISD students who are zoned to attend Southwest High School.  We are working with VIA to get a bus stop at SW Legacy for students outside of the SWISD attendance area.

Will students be able to participate in extracurricular activities like sports and band?

All CAST STEM students will have access to all extracurricular activities at SW Legacy High School.  All practices will have to be attended before and/or after school.  There will be no time during the school day to take an athletic period or fine arts period.  We will work with all coaches and sponsors to ensure students receive support in their participation in UIL events.

What happens if I change my mind on my pathway?

All 9th graders will be exposed to all 4 pathways.  At the end of their 9th grade year, they will select a pathway to focus on.  Many of the classes are required for multiple pathways.  All students will have the ability to earn the same college credit hours.  These hours will be beneficial regardless of the student’s future studies.

What type of academic support is provided to students?

All CAST STEM students will have built-in advisory support each school day.  We will also provide support for note taking, organization, time management, study skills, and other college and career ready skills.  Teachers will be available for tutoring before and/or after school.  Teachers will also have an electronic classroom where students can communicate with teachers outside of the school day.  Students will also participate in a Summer Bridge program to ensure they are prepared for the school year.
