Principal Selection Process

Overview of the Process

Research shows that great schools do not exist apart from great leaders. In the field of education, selecting an effective school principal is one of the most significant decisions that a school district can make as leadership is second only to classroom instruction among all school-related factors that contribute to what students learn at school (Leithwood, Jantzi, 2000). Therefore, Southwest ISD has developed a rigorous, clear, and transparent process to ensure the highest quality candidate is selected.

Application and Selection
  • Candidates register and apply to open principal vacancies on the SWISD website
  • Candidates are screened using a series of protocols aligned to the SWISD Leadership Commitment Framework. These include activities such as reviewing a data set about a school and providing analysis along with a strategic plan, observing a portion of a lesson, completing an analysis and engaging in role play conversation.
  • Activities are used to gather evidence around the specific indicators of growth, service, and results in the SWISD Leadership Commitment Framework, as well as competencies identified as critical to successfully lead in SWISD.
    • Constantly seeks best practice; self aware and empathetic; operates with integrity; optimistic and resilient
    • Effectively communicates; cultivates and empowers leaders; partners with the community; builds trusting relationships.
    • Builds vision of success; data-driven decision-making; plans, executes, and reflects; innovates and drives change; ensures equity.
