Southwest ISD Board Names Elementary School in Honor of Former Board Member Juan Alvarado

At the Southwest ISD Board meeting held on Nov. 28, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved the naming of the district's 12th elementary campus as the “Juan M. Alvarado Elementary School.” This recognition pays homage to the exceptional service and enduring commitment of Juan Alvarado, a beloved figure in the Southwest ISD community.

“This decision reflects our deep respect and high regard for a man who has spent the majority of his life serving our school community in countless ways,” said Board President Sylvester Vasquez. "His legacy resonates in the achievements of our students today. His guiding principle, reminding us that it's all about the children, each and every one of them, remains an invaluable lesson for us all."

For close to five decades, Mr. Alvarado has been a strong advocate for the students, teachers, and the continuous advancement of Southwest ISD. His journey of service began with a keen observation and a deep dedication to excellence. Recognizing the need to enhance the learning environment for our children, Mr. Alvarado fearlessly addressed issues head-on, initiating transformative changes that have left a lasting mark on our community.

Mr. Alvarado became the first Hispanic member of the Southwest ISD Board of Trustees, marking a significant milestone in the district's history. Despite facing adversity, including threats and isolation, Mr. Alvarado remained resolute in his dedication to serving the district's children, never faltering from his commitment to their well-being and educational advancement. “His courage in breaking barriers not only shaped our district but also paved the way for others to step forward and make their mark,” said SWISD Superintendent Dr. Jeanette Ball. “He opened doors and inspired generations of leaders. He is a true trailblazer.”

During Alvarado's time on the board, he strongly pushed for equitable opportunities for every student and improved working conditions for educators. His vision and determination laid the groundwork for positive change, ensuring our district's growth and success. He was instrumental in starting the district-wide Mariachi program at SWISD. He believed that music was a great way for our young people and families to honor their heritage. He didn't stop until we launched the Mariachi program at SWISD, starting from just one middle school and growing into one of the district's most beloved programs. In recognition of his many contributions, Southwest ISD is proud to name its newest campus in honor of Mr. Alvarado.

The new school is one of the Bond 2023 projects which addresses rapid growth in the district. Southwest ISD’s enrollment is projected to surpass 16,000 students by 2031. Juan M. Alvarado Elementary School is slated to open its doors in the Spring of 2026. It will be located at 4495 SW Verano Pkwy near SW Legacy High School and Resnik Middle School.
