Helping Hands and a Heart of Gold: SW Legacy Senior Steps Up After Hill Country Flooding

There are moments in life we never forget—where we were, how we felt, and what we did in the aftermath. For Southwest Legacy Titans senior Jonathan Flores and his family, the devastating 4th of July flooding in Kerr County and surrounding areas was one of those moments.

Instead of sitting back, Jonathan and his dad decided to live out the golden rule—Love Your Neighbor. Without hesitation, they loaded up equipment and heavy machinery and drove out to help families northwest of SWISD's boundaries, lending a hand where it was needed most.

“How devastated the families must be,” Jonathan shared. “The hard part is that it was a lot of little girls and little boys. I have siblings of my own, and I’d be heartbroken if something happened to them.”

He described the destruction as “massive and overwhelming”—something you never forget. Jonathan and his father agreed: they were in a position to help, so they did. And for both of them, the emotional weight of the tragedy—especially the loss of young lives—hit hard.

Their efforts haven’t stopped. Jonathan and his family plan to return to the Kerrville area on August 2 to assist with food distribution for those still in need.

This experience has left a lasting impression on Jonathan, who says this act of service has become a life lesson he’ll carry with him forever.
“A lot of people out there need help,” he said. “Whenever someone asks themselves, ‘Should I help?’ — be that person who says yes.”

“I want to help. And this made me realize I want to help even more.”

The Flores family's kindness and selflessness are a powerful reminder of what it means to be a true Texan.
“Texans love their state so much,” Jonathan said with a smile. “People here love each other no matter what.”

Jonathan now heads into his senior year at Southwest Legacy with a bright future ahead. He’s already CTE-certified in welding, has a passion for history, and is aiming to bounce back from a knee injury to rejoin his Titans teammates under the Friday Night Lights.

SWISD is proud of you, Jonathan, for your heart, your strength, and your example of compassion. Best of luck in your senior year, and thank you for sharing your story with SWISD Communications.
