Notice of Nondiscrimination
It is the policy of the Southwest Independent School District not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability in admission or access to, or treatment or employment in, its programs and activities as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title II of the American with Disabilities Act of 1990, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. No provision of an extracurricular behavioral standard shall have the effect of discriminating on the basis of sex, race, disability, religion, or ethnicity.
Eligibility No Pass, No Play
A student may not participate in any extracurricular activity if a grade lower than 70 is earned in any class at the end of the six-week reporting period. This student may continue to participate in all practices and preparations as determined necessary by the coach, director, or sponsor of the organization during this time of ineligibility. This student may regain full eligibility status to participate in the extracurricular activity if, at the end of the designated 3 week period, all grades in all classes are equal or greater than 70.
Exception: Southwest ISD has an advanced course policy that allows exemption from No pass, no play. Students participating in UIL concert and sight reading evaluation are also exempt.
Grade of Incomplete
A student with an incomplete grade at the end of a grading period is ineligible at the end of the seven day grace period unless the incomplete was replaced with a passing grade prior to the end of the seven day grace period.
Extra Credit Work
Extra credit work, or work (including re-test) turned in after the grading period or evaluation has ended MAY NOT BE CONSIDERED when determining a student's eligibility for extracurricular activities except in the case of an incomplete grade as noted above.
Grading/Assessment
If a student is enrolled in a class in which participation in extracurricular activities is a reasonable expectation of the class, the teacher may consider the students' participation in the extracurricular activity when assigning the grade for the grading period during which the extracurricular activity occurred. A student may not fail a class by solely participating in the extracurricular activity component of the class. The exception to this provision is that a student who is ineligible to participate in an extracurricular activity shall not suffer a grade penalty for failure to participate in the extracurricular activity or public performance.
