No-Backpack Policy

At Southwest ISD, we prioritize the safety of our students and staff across all campuses and facilities. We recognize that safety is a shared responsibility and request your cooperation in maintaining a safe environment for everyone. As an added safety measure, starting May 1, students will not be allowed to bring backpacks or large purses to school.

Students can carry a non-clear small bag or clutch, a clear bag, or a 1-gallon ZipLock bag for items such as cell phones, money, and hygiene products. We understand this may inconvenience some students, but this new policy is necessary to reduce the risk of dangerous items being brought onto campus.

Please note that students involved in extracurricular activities such as sports or band may bring a backpack but it must be put away during designated times set by the campus.

Bags meeting the following specifications will be permitted:

Small bags and/or clutches - 5.5” x 8.5” or smaller
Clear Bags – (Plastic, vinyl, or PVC) 12” x 6” x 12”
1-Gallon Clear Freezer Bag – (Ziplock bag or similar) 12” x 12” or smaller

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we moving away from the use of backpacks during the school day?
As we approach the end of the school year, typically, there is an increase in fake social media threats. We have not had any threats this year, but as an added safety measure, we are implementing a no-backpack policy.

What does “no backpacks” mean?
“No backpacks” means that students may not use a backpack in the school building throughout the school day
If my student is in athletics or an extracurricular activity that requires changing, can my student bring a bag?
Students involved in extracurricular activities such as sports or band may bring a backpack, but it must be put away during designated times set by the campus.

Can my student bring a clear or mesh backpack?

Students can only carry small bags or clutch purses, a clear bag, or 1-Gallon Clear Freezer Bag. Specific dimensions are indicated above.

What grades does this policy apply to?
All SWISD K-12 students

Are lunch boxes permitted?
Yes. Non-transparent lunch boxes are permitted to be carried.

How do clear bags contribute to safety?
By easily seeing the items in the clear bags as students enter the school, campus personnel will be able to ensure that prohibited items are not included in the student’s belongings. However, campus personnel may still require students to open and inspect individual bags.
