Hero in Scrubs: Nurse's Quick Actions Save the Day at School Campus

On September 25, 2024, Spicewood Park Elementary School was taking part in an organized training exercise. During this training exercise a staff member, later identified as Yadra Esquivel, became unconscious and unresponsive. The school nurse, Christina Villanueva, assessed Esquivel and requested 911-Emergency Services. Mrs. Villanueva then directed Mr. Tyree Wiseman, school counselor, to retrieve the campus AED device and had Mr. Roberto Garcia, school social worker, retrieve her emergency bag. Due to Esquivel's medical state, Nurse Villanueva began CPR while awaiting the AED. Nurse Villanueva then utilized the AED to assess Esquivel. The AED did not advise defibrillation, so Nurse Villanueva continued to administer CPR. A few minutes later Esquivel regained consciousness and was able to verbally communicate.

The Southwest ISD Police Department is therefore proud to recognize Nurse Christina Villanueva, Mr. Tyree Wiseman, and Roberto Garcia for their quick thinking, exceptional courage, and outstanding performance in their life saving efforts.
