When the Storm Passed, the Work was Just Beginning

While many of us were assessing the damage at home, members of our Facilities and Maintenance team were already working to make sure our schools could safely reopen for students and staff.

Crews spent the weekend clearing downed trees and debris, checking campuses for damage, and working alongside CPS Energy and other service providers to restore power and essential utilities as quickly as possible.

Their goal was simple: have our schools ready for Monday morning. Thanks to their hard work, nearly every campus was able to open as planned. Two schools remained closed Monday because electrical service had not yet been restored, a situation outside the district crew’s control. Our teams continued coordinating with utility partners, and by Tuesday, every school was back up and running.

Much of the work that keeps our schools operating happens behind the scenes. It happens early in the morning, late at night, and sometimes over a weekend after a major storm.

To our Facilities and Maintenance crews and the partners who worked alongside them, thank you for answering the call and helping our schools get back to what matters most: serving our students.

If you see one of our crew members around campus, give them a thank you!
