Standard Response Protocol (SRP)
Safety is Our Top Priority
The Southwest Independent School District is committed to keeping our students, staff, and visitors safe. To support this commitment, we have adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the “I Love U Guys” Foundation.
The SRP provides a shared language and clear, simple actions for students, staff, and first responders during an emergency. By using this standardized approach, everyone knows what to do, which helps keep our schools calm, safe, and secure.
What is the Standard Response Protocol?
The SRP is not based on individual scenarios but on five specific actions that can be applied to any emergency. Each action is communicated with a clear directive and is easy for students and staff to understand.
The Five Actions:
- Hold – “In Your Classroom or Area, Clear the Halls”
Used when hallways need to be kept clear. Learning continues as normal inside classrooms. - Secure – “Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors”
Used when a threat or hazard is outside the building. Everyone comes indoors and normal activities continue inside. - Lockdown – “Locks, Lights, Out of Sight”
Used when there is a threat inside the building. Students and staff move to a safe location, stay quiet, and remain out of sight. - Evacuate – “To a Location”
Used when students and staff need to move to a different location for safety. - Shelter – “For Hazard Using a Safety Strategy”
Used when specific protective actions are needed, such as during severe weather, a hazardous material spill, or other environmental dangers.
Why SRP Works
- Simple and Clear: Easy to learn and remember.
- Consistent: Uses the same language across schools, districts, and emergency responders.
- Effective: Helps reduce confusion and increases safety during emergencies.
Practicing SRP
Just like fire drills, schools regularly practice SRP drills throughout the year. These drills help students and staff feel confident and prepared to respond calmly and quickly in an actual emergency.
