Police Department
Welcome to the Southwest ISD Police Department!
Texas House Bill 3
The Southwest Independent School District Police Department is leading the way in ensuring student safety by being fully compliant with Texas House Bill 3. This legislation mandates that every public school campus must have a police officer or armed security officer to protect students, staff, and the entire school community. The Southwest ISD Police Department's commitment to this law means they are not only meeting the state's requirements but also taking proactive measures to create a secure and welcoming environment for all students. Their dedication to safety demonstrates that they are putting the wellbeing of the community first-ensuring that every school campus remains a place of learning and growth without compromise.
People
The district employs over 25 fully commissioned and armed law enforcement officers to ensure the safety and security of our schools. At each high school, there are two officers assigned, fostering a strong presence and building relationships with students and staff. Additionally, each middle school benefits from the dedicated service of one officer, while every elementary school is also assigned one officer to maintain a safe learning environment for younger students.

In support of this robust security framework, there is a specialized K-9 officer dedicated to enhancing safety protocols and assisting with various security measures. Each campus has established its own threat assessment teams, comprised of trained professionals who assess and respond to potential risks.
Moreover, each campus is equipped with certified school counselors and healthcare professionals, readily available to provide support for students' mental health and wellness needs. This comprehensive approach not only prioritizes immediate safety but also fosters a nurturing and supportive educational atmosphere across the district.
Facilities & Technology
Access control technology is crucial for maintaining the safety and security of our elementary schools. Implementing a single point of entry at each school will ensure that all visitors are monitored and controlled as they enter the premises. To support this, a thorough upgrade of door hardware is essential, with emphasis on durability and reliability to withstand frequent use and potential tampering.
Additionally, the installation of high-definition video surveillance cameras throughout the campus will enable real-time monitoring, allowing school officials to oversee activities in and around the school environment effectively. These cameras will not only deter unauthorized access but also provide valuable footage that can be reviewed if incidents occur.
Establishing direct communication and collaboration with local law enforcement agencies is vital. This partnership will facilitate immediate responses to any security threats and ensure that officers are familiar with the campus layout and access points, which can enhance the overall safety strategy.
Furthermore, instituting a comprehensive background check system for all visitors—including parents, volunteers, and contractors—will help maintain a secure environment. This system will verify the identity and purpose of each individual before granting access to the school grounds.
Lastly, numbering all campus exterior doors will streamline emergency response efforts and enhance communication among staff and first responders during incidents. Clearly marked doors will assist in quick access and headcount management, contributing to a safer school environment for students and staff alike.
Procedures
Comprehensive emergency plans and procedures have been put in place, tailored to the specific needs of each district and campus. Our commitment to safety includes regular training sessions on these emergency protocols, ensuring that all staff members and students are well-prepared for any situation. Throughout the year, we conduct scheduled safety drills that simulate various emergency scenarios, allowing participants to practice their responses in a controlled environment.

To enhance security further, all staff and high school students are required to wear photo identification badges at all times on campus. This policy not only helps to identify individuals within the school community but also deters unauthorized access. We implement the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) language in our communication regarding emergencies, providing a clear and consistent framework for responding effectively to incidents. This structured approach ensures that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities during critical situations, fostering a culture of safety and preparedness within our schools.
