Dragon Signing Day

The Senior Class of 2024 is days away from graduation as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. On Wednesday’s Senior Signing Day, nine seniors signed their college letters of intent for their next chapter in life. Tristan Dennie is taking his talents to Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Tristan shared what he will miss about Southwest, "I’m going to miss the people, from the teachers, the principal, coaches and the staff.” Headed to Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, IL, is Dragons Basketball star Lillian Covarrubias who thanked her parents, coaches, and teammates for all their love and support. Another Dragons basketball All-Star, Josiah McDonald, is heading north to Williston, North Dakota to continue his high-flying play above the rim at Williston State home of the Tetons. A true leader in the ranks of the SW Navy JROTC is Anisa Silva, who will head to Houston to attend Texas Southern University. As Anisa attends Texas Southern University for her degree, she will be cross-enrolled in the Rice University NROTC program. Dragon Fire Dancer Destiny Olivares is headed to the Texas Big Country to Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX. “This moment honestly feels so surreal,” says Destiny, “ I would've never expected this, like if you would’ve told me five years from now, ‘Hey you’d be dancing at the collegiate level.” I would’ve been like yeah you're crazy.” DFD Coach Michelle Rubio-Garcia told the crowd, that Destiny will be the first DFD Alum to start and be featured on the first-ever DFD Team Alumni Wall of Honor in hopes of motivating current and future DFD teams to go dance in college. Playing college soccer with his brother again in the comforts of their hometown will be soccer star John Soliz at nearby Texas A&M - San Antonio. Another Dragons soccer star Luis Varela will head up I-35 to Arlington Baptist University to play on the pitch for the Patriots. The Ridge Runners of Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas will be getting basketball star Stephanie Gonzalez next fall. The Scobee alum shares, "It’s about a 10-hour drive, it’s really far but it’s exciting to be around a new environment, new people and just a new community and hopefully bring them together.” Dragons volleyball star Briaza Osborne, said “I will be missing home, but I know I will have fun.” Briaza is going to Kansas City Community College to play for the Blue Devils volleyball team.

 

It was a morning filled with smiles, tears of joy, and a bunch of “Thank You’s” for our Dragons, their families, and everyone in attendance. Congratulations to the entire Class of 2024! Good Luck and Best Wishes in all your endeavors. As Always We Are Southwest!
