Bond Project Updates

On May 6, the SWISD community passed a $250,000,000 bond with a remarkable 71% of the vote. This achievement is a testament to the commitment and dedication of SWISD's board, staff, and community towards providing a high-quality education and safe learning environment for its students. We will continually update this page as we move forward and progress with bond projects.

March 2025

District Wide Fencing Project

The Board approved KenCon as the contractor for the District-Wide Fencing project with a $4,725,000 contract. District staff collaborated with Alamo Architects to develop an RFCSP, evaluating proposals based on cost, ranging from $4,670,000 to $7,770,000, project management, experience, financial stability, and litigation history.

January 2025

Construction Documents for the Southwest Legacy High School Addition Project

Trustees approved the Construction Documents for the Southwest Legacy High School Addition Project. District staff and Pfluger Architects worked together to identify the program and design needs of the Southwest Legacy High School Addition project. The budget for this project is approximately $14,600,000. The cost of this project is being funded by 2023 Bond funds.

District-Wide Fencing Project Construction Documents

The Board approved the Construction documents presented by Alamo Architects. District staff and Alamo Architects worked together to identify the program and design needs of the Southwest District-Wide Fencing project. The budget for this project is approximately $8,500,000. The cost of this project is being funded by the SAFE Grants and 2023 Bond funds.

November 2024

The Board received updates on the Bond 2023 projects, including The Press Box, Central Office, Southwest Legacy High School, and Bob Hope Elementary. The press box will be near completion after football season. The campus construction projects are underway, each progressing through various stages toward completion. Some are in the initial phase of site preparation and foundation work, while others are moving into framing and structural development. As each project nears completion, the district is excited to see the positive impact these improvements will have on the community.

Architectural Services for the District-Wide Fencing Project

The Board approved Alamo Architects to provide services for the District-Wide Fencing Project. As a pre-approved firm under RFP 2223-111, Alamo Architects will support safety improvements funded by the $250 million bond approved by voters on May 6, 2023, and ratified by the Board on May 16, 2023. This bond supports district-wide safety upgrades, two new elementary schools, a central administration/professional development center, and campus renovations or expansions.

Design Development Drawings for the Southwest Legacy High School Additions Project

Trustees approved the Design Development drawings for the Southwest Legacy High School Additions Project, presented by Pfluger Architects. District staff collaborated closely with Pfluger to determine the program and design requirements for the project.

Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for Package 1 of the Kriewald Road School of the Arts Renovation Project

The Board approved the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) of $1,001,346 for Package 1 of the Kriewald Elementary School of the Arts Renovation Project, funded by the 2023 Bond. Marksmen General Contractors, selected as Construction Manager at Risk in July 2024, collaborated with district staff and Huckabee to prepare the GMP.

Southwest Legacy High School Roof Repair Project

The Board approved Brazos Urethane Inc. for the Southwest Legacy High School roof repair project, with a contract not to exceed $190,400, funded by the 2023 Bond. The 2017 roof system has experienced failures, and both the original manufacturer and installer are no longer in business. Brazos Urethane, an approved vendor through the Choice Partners cooperative, provided a repair quote and agreed to an 8-year extended warranty for $0.12 per square foot, included in the total project cost. The company has successfully completed previous district projects.

Southwest Legacy High School

The proposed needs for renovations of the campus include general classrooms, choral suite, cosmetology, and exterior canopy. The project is expected to be completed by July of 2026. Trustees approved Joeris General Contractors as the Construction Manager at Risk for the Southwest Legacy High School additions project with a contract in the amount of $1,735,821.

Bob Hope Elementary update

Kencon Construction completed the infrastructure and utilities to help facilitate the new additions to the campus. Additionally, some demolition has taken place onsite. The next phase will take place in the next 30 days. Installation of portable buildings, fire sprinklers, interior paint, new AV and power, and renovation of existing buildings will be completed.

August 2024

Construction Update

Board members received an update on various construction projects, including the SWHS Stadium press box and renovations at multiple elementary schools. The press box will be completed by October 4, with a ribbon cutting scheduled to take place before the Dragon football game that evening.

The building permit for the new Central Office has recently been received, and the foundation will soon be set, marking the early stages of construction.

The portables have now arrived at Bob Hope Elementary, and students will be relocated to these on-site portables to allow renovations to begin. Contractors provided an update on the upcoming Southwest Elementary renovation project. Exterior renovations will include upgrading the canopy and adding an accent to the entrance. If the budget allows, the parking lot will be resurfaced. Interior improvements will involve replacing the AC and rooftop units, PA system, and fire alarm system. Upgrades will also be made to technology, flooring, and ceilings. Additional interior work will include repainting the walls, updating interior signage, and installing new LED light fixtures. Plumbing fixtures and water fountains will also be replaced. The gymnasium will receive new sports flooring, and the library will be upgraded to include areas for storytelling. The cafeteria will undergo a complete renovation. The lobby will be secured with bulletproof windows, and the hallway colors will be updated as well.The interior and exterior designs for Juan Alvarado Elementary were also presented. The SWISD Board of Trustees approved the construction documents that were presented by Marmon Mok Architecture. The budget for the project is approximately $43,736,270.

Southwest Elementary Renovation Project

The Board of Trustees approved the Southwest Elementary Schematic Design drawings that have been presented by Garza Bomberger & Associates to provide architechtural services for the Southwest Elementary renovation project. The budget for this project is approximately $19,500,000 and will be funded by the 2023 Bond funds.

July 2024

Board members received an update on various construction projects, including the SWHS Stadium pressbox and renovations at multiple elementary schools. The schematic design for Elm Creek Elementary was presented, featuring updated rooms, an expanded library, extra staff rooms, and a new playground. Additionally, the schematic design for the Kriewald School of the Arts was shown, highlighting exterior and interior upgrades, a new outdoor amphitheater, more faculty restrooms, and increased collaboration spaces.

Alvarado Elementary Drawings

The SWISD Board of Trustees has approved the Design Development drawings presented by Marmon Mok Architecture for the new Alvarado Elementary #12 project. Marmon Mok Architecture was previously authorized to provide architectural services for this project. Collaborating with district staff, they have identified program and design requirements. The project's budget is approximately $39,900,000, which will be covered by 2023 Bond funds.

April 2024

SWHS Pressbox Update

A representative from Pfluger Architects provided an update on the construction progress of the Southwest High School Stadium Box. They assured that barring any material or weather-related setbacks, the project remains on track for completion by August 16, just before the start of the football season. Steel erection is scheduled to begin in May.

New Central Administration Building Project

The Board approved the construction documents that RVK presented for the New Central Administration Building. The district staff and RVK worked together to identify the program and design needs of the New Central Administration Building project. RVK has prepared Construction Documents for this project. The budget for this project is approximately $25,000,000. 2023 Bond funds will fund the cost of this project

Access Control Security System

The Board approved the contract for the Access Control Security System to 3Sixty Integrated at a total cost of $1,334,526. Funding for this project will be provided from 2023 Bond funds. This system is part of the district-wide plan to outfit the District's campus sites with the best possible security solutions.

Bob Hope Elementary Additions and Renovation Project

The SWISD Board of Trustees has approved construction documents prepared by O’Connell Robertson, the firm selected to provide architecture services for the Bob Hope Elementary additions and renovation project. Collaboratively, district staff and O’Connell Robertson have identified the program and design requirements for the project. O’Connell Robertson has now completed the construction documents for the project, with an estimated budget of approximately $8,500,000. Funding for this project will be sourced from the 2023 Bond funds.

February 2024

Schematic Design for Alvarado Elementary School (Elementary #12 Project)

Trustees gave their approval of the Schematic Design drawings presented by Marmon Mok Architecture. Collaboratively, District staff and Marmon Mok Architecture meticulously identified the program and design requirements for the new Alvarado Elementary project. The budget for this project is approximately $39,900,000. The cost of this project will be funded by 2023 Bond funds.

January 2024

Bob Hope Elementary Additions and Renovation Project

The Board approved the Design Development drawings created by O’Connell Robertson, the approved architecture firm for the project. Collaborating closely with district staff, O’Connell Robertson identified the program and design requirements for the Bob Hope Elementary additions and renovation project, encompassing additional classrooms and an upgraded library. The allocated budget for this project is approximately $7,200,000, with funding secured through the 2023 Bond funds.

November 2023

Schematic Design for Central Office/Professional Development Center

The Board approved the Schematic Design drawings that were presented by RVK Architecture. The budget for this project is approximately 18,000,000. The cost of this project will be funded by 2023 Bond funds.

Construction Delivery Method for the New Elementary #12 Project

The Board approved the Construction Manager at Risk method as the delivery method for Southwest ISD Elementary #12 project. The District, along with Marmon Mok, believe that the Construction Manager at Risk delivery method will provide the best value for the District. This method is based on the selected General Contractor being an active with the architect throughout the planning and design phase. The estimated budget for this project is approximately $39,900,000 and will be funded by the 2023 Bond.

Bus Purchases

The Board approved the acquisition of six 72-passenger diesel-engine buses, along with two special needs buses and two activity buses, all sourced from Thomas Built Buses, at a combined cost of $1,382,700.00. The decision to proceed with this purchase is rooted in the Transportation department's essential requirement to replace aging buses. District staff is specifically requesting these additions to the district fleet, and they will ensure that all buses come equipped with air-conditioning, seat belts, and interior cameras for enhanced safety. Thomas Built Buses is known for its cost-effective fuel consumption, lower maintenance expenses, and reduced replacement part costs. Additionally, Thomas Built Buses exhibit superior durability when compared to the other two competing vendors. It's important to note that the district obtained price quotes from vendors who are part of TASB's BuyBoard purchasing cooperative.

September 2023

Construction Manager at Risk Contract for the New Central Administration Building Project

The Board approved Kencon Constructors, LLC as the Construction Manager at Risk for the New Central Administration Building project. The contract for this undertaking amounts to $865,000.00 and will be funded through the bond. Bids for the CMAR contract were solicited on August 29, 2023, resulting in the receipt of 10 bids. These bids encompassed costs for both the pre-construction and construction phases, spanning a range from $665,204.00 to $2,745,298.00. District Staff and RVK Architecture meticulously evaluated and ranked the bidding firms based on the selection criteria published in the solicitation. Out of the 10 submitted bids, Kencon Constructors was the highest-scoring firm.

The Board has granted approval for the Schematic Design drawings, which were conceived and presented by Pfluger Architects. In a collaborative effort, District staff and Pfluger Architects identified the program and design requirements for the SWHS Stadium Press Box Renovation project. The project is allocated a budget of approximately $5,500,000, and funding for it will be derived from the 2023 Bond funds.

Architectural Firms for the 2023 Bond Projects Initial Bond Sale

The Board approved the firms listed below to provide architectural services for the 2023 Bond Projects' initial bond sale. District staff is now prepared to start the architectural programming phase for several of these projects. This decision follows Southwest ISD voters' approval of a $250 million bond on May 6, 2023. The bond aims to facilitate the construction of two new elementary schools, establish a new central administration and professional development center, implement safety upgrades across all campuses, and renovate or expand multiple other campuses district-wide. It is important to note that all selected firms are part of the pre-approved Architectural Services from RFQ 2223-111.
