Workers' Compensation

SAFETY

Southwest Independent School District holds the safety of every employee as one of the highest priorities. Injuries and illnesses create personal loss to employees and their families and also reduce the District’s ability to provide a quality education to our students.

The District provides all employees with workers’ compensation coverage for work-related injuries that occur in the course and scope of employment. The District is self-insured for this exposure and currently uses the services of a third party claims administrator TASB Risk Management Fund. The Benefits Department manages the workers’ compensation process by assuring that:

• Employee injuries are reported timely and within the guidelines of the law

• Employees are counseled to insure they understand District procedures and statutory benefits

• Injured workers are reintegrated into workplace at the earliest medically appropriate opportunity

• Claims handling standards (statutory and contractual) are maintained

• The District is in compliance with the Workers’ Compensation statute and Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) rules.

SWISD and TASB Risk Management Fund will work together to ensure that you the injured employee receives timely and appropriate health care.

A WORK RELATED INJURY

All work-related injuries must be reported to their campus principal and/or supervisor immediately. The third party administrator, TASB Risk Management Fund, has the responsibility to investigate each claim thoroughly and to make a determination whether or not the claim is legitimately compensable.

Employees are covered by Workers’ Compensation Insurance, which may compensate employees for lost time, medical expenses, and loss of life or dismemberment from an injury arising out of or in the course of work. If required, an injured employee should proceed to an appropriate Political Subdivision Workers' Compensation Alliance medical care facility for treatment and must report any accident or injury immediately to his or her supervisor so that the necessary documentation may be completed. If the severity of the injury prevents the employee from reporting immediately to the supervisor, a coworker or witness should contact the principal, supervisor and/or the Benefits Department for the injured party. The required forms must be completed and faxed or emailed to the Benefits Department upon notification of injury.
